This particular scene in Hamlet triggers not only the burning desire for revenge in hamlet but also in laertes later on in the play. Revenge is played in this scene because hamlets dad has told him to leave his mother alone but Hamlets desire for revenge of his father has lead him far enough to act mad and crazy because of his mothers actions on getting re married only three months later.
In this special edition Hamlet episode of the simpsons, this scene is where laertes is supposed to get his revenge, but fails king cladius's task, and ends up killing himself.
